The Marble Falls High School team tennis team is 2-1 in the District 19-4A standings for second place after gaining wins over Belton New Tech and Salado 17-2 but lost to Lago Vista 14-5.
Head coach Sam Whitley noted the main key to success for the Mustangs and Lady Mustangs is outlasting their opponents.
“Eighty-five percent of points in tennis is scored due to unforced errors,” he said. “So our goal is to put the ball back into their court, not necessarily to wait for a winning shot, but so our opponent can take that risk and hit the ball out or wide.”
He notes that the scores tell only part of the story.
“Our team is consistently competing,” he said. “Even though we lost to Lago Vista 14-5, there were several games, sets and matches that went to tie breakers and unfortunately we lost. Same versus Salado. There were 11 tie breakers, and we won 8 of those. So even though the final score was 17-2, had we lost some or all of those tiebreakers, the score would have been much closer or (we might have) even lost the match.”
The junior varsity travels to play at Liberty Hill at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 14. The varsity welcomes Burnet at 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 22, to the Charlie and Nancy Herrington Tennis Center, 2101 Mustang Drive, to determine second place in the standings.
